Depression Treatment at Jintara. What the Program Includes

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting more than 300 million people. Although depression does not have an instant cure, treatment can reduce symptoms to the point where they no longer meet diagnosis criteria. Results vary from person to person. What matters is getting the right support in the right healing environment. At Jintara, we build a personalised treatment plan around your specific mental health needs and adjust it as you progress through the treatment program.

  • Psychiatric assessment and medication review. Within your first seven days, you meet with our psychiatrist for a thorough evaluation. If medication is clinically appropriate, the psychiatrist monitors and adjusts your care throughout your stay. PHQ-9 and GAD-7 baselines are taken at initial assessment and re-scored through the program, alongside the Day 2 hospital workup at Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai or Chiang Mai Ram that includes bloods, liver and kidney function, EKG, and chest X-ray. Different people respond to different approaches, and the psychiatrist works closely with you.
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy. CBT is the first-line psychological treatment for adult depression. Denise O'Leary, our lead therapist and clinical director, teaches you to identify negative thought patterns and challenge them with structured tools. You receive two individual therapy sessions per week as part of the mental health treatment program.
  • Behavioural activation and group therapy. Depression makes it difficult to imagine a life that feels good. Our Life Makeover groups address the isolation that worsens mental health conditions. These groups come from different angles, addressing pleasure, excitement, and engagement with daily life. The program gives you practical tools for handling depression in everyday life. For depressed clients, Denise describes her role clearly. "When people come in very depressed and without hope, it's the counsellor's job to hold the hope on their behalf."

There's one tool, which I like to call the Swiss Army knife of CBT. It allows you to identify a situation, how it's affecting you, and what beliefs or thoughts you have. By the time you leave, we want you to be able to use that tool in your head, not on a form.

Depression Retreat in Thailand. Why the Environment Supports Mental Health

Depression deepens in isolation and lifts with structure, connection, and movement. The environment at Jintara is built around that clinical reality. The setting is not a luxury add-on, it is part of the treatment.

Jintara is located in northern Thailand, in Chiang Mai. We accept a maximum of 10 clients at any time. We have 32 staff, giving a 3.2-to-1 staff-to-client ratio. You get a large private room in our residential facility. The small group setting reduces overwhelm, particularly for people dealing with depression and mental health conditions. Our holistic approach combines yoga, meditation, and fitness with structured therapy. Holistic activities support the recovery process alongside clinical care.

Darren Lockie, Jintara's founder: "While the setting is comfortable, Jintara is a structured clinical program, not a holiday retreat. 90% of our work focuses on mental health, with medical detox comprising only the initial 10%." Over a 30-day treatment program, you receive approximately 65 to 70 hours of individual and group therapy sessions.

How We Determine What Is Causing Your Mental Health Issues

Mental health conditions are sometimes substance-induced and sometimes pre-existing. One of the first things we determine is whether your depression stands alone or connects to substance use. Many people develop substance dependencies as a way to self-medicate underlying conditions like anxiety or depression. Substance use and depression frequently co-occur, and each condition can intensify the other. If depression is your primary concern, we adjust the program to focus on mental health treatment from day one. For clients with dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders, our depression and dual diagnosis treatment provides targeted support.

Denise explains the assessment process. "Around week two or week three, if it's substance induced, then they'll be feeling way better. So then we know." If symptoms of depression persist after sobriety, we know the depression is a pre-existing condition requiring targeted treatment. Untreated depression compounds suicide risk, drives heavier substance use, fragments sleep, and erodes work capacity over months and years. Depression treatment addresses root causes, not just symptoms. We treat the whole person, including their physical state and the circumstances that led to their mental health issues.

How Depression Improves During Treatment. A Realistic Timeline

Recovery from depression does not happen overnight. Results vary from person to person. Here is what we typically see in our treatment program for depression.

  • Week one. We establish a baseline, start building your daily routine, and begin treatment alongside any medical care you need. Denise provides guidance during this phase. "This is how it's going to go. This is what you can expect. You're in a safe place." Early targets include improved sleep, eating, and participation. Managing symptoms is the priority.
  • Weeks two and three. Most people start to feel a real shift. "By the end of week two into week three, most people are feeling way better, mentally, physically, emotionally." If symptoms lift, we build on that momentum with deeper therapeutic work. If symptoms persist, we adjust your plan. Anxiety often improves alongside depression during this phase.
  • Week four. Denise describes the ideal state before discharge from the treatment program. "When people say, 'I'm feeling a bit nervous,' we go, 'Excellent. You should be nervous. Now, let's use that to make plans on how to keep yourself safe.'" The final week focuses on your relapse prevention plan and the transition to life after the mental health retreat.

Depression is a condition that can go into remission and recur throughout life. Treatment does not promise complete recovery or a permanent cure. Depression treatment gives you coping skills and a support system for recognising early warning signs. Our aftercare program provides ongoing support with weekly groups and follow-up at one, three, and six months.

When Mental Health Treatment Needs More Than 30 Days

Our foundation treatment program runs for 30 days, but some clients with depression and trauma benefit from an extended stay. For trauma related conditions, EMDR therapy becomes available in the second month of treatment. Denise explains. "We're not doing EMDR until month two. I'll start preparation work, emotion regulation skills. In month two, sessions go up to 90 minutes, three times a week." EMDR treatment is reserved for eight-week or longer stays with identified clinical need.

We are transparent about this because it matters for your mental health. Opening deep psychological wounds without enough time to process them safely would leave you vulnerable. The 30-day program provides depression treatment through CBT and builds a foundation for full recovery. That personal experience of life without depression creates motivation for sustainable recovery.

Being at Jintara is like a tasting menu. Because you've tasted it, you're more likely, when you go home, to buy the weird ingredients and make the complicated sauce, because you know the result will be really nice.

Mental Health Retreat vs. Wellness Retreat. Understanding the Difference

People searching for a depression retreat in Thailand and those looking for wellness retreats often want the same outcome. They want to feel better away from daily life. The difference between a mental health retreat and a wellness retreat is clinical depth.

Wellness retreats provide relaxation and general wellbeing through holistic activities. A clinical mental health retreat like Jintara adds psychiatric treatment, structured therapy sessions, and clinical monitoring for mental health conditions. Jintara uses a holistic approach that combines the setting of a health retreat in Thailand with evidence-based depression treatment.

Many rehab centres and mental health retreat centres cannot match Jintara's 3.2-to-1 ratio with 32 highly qualified staff for 10 clients. You work closely with professionals who know your case individually. Executive burnout, co-occurring disorders, and mental health conditions all receive the same focused treatment at Jintara.

Common Questions About Depression Treatment at Jintara

Yes. We accept clients with depression and no substance use history. The program adjusts to focus on mental health treatment from day one, with psychiatric assessment, CBT, behavioural activation, and structured daily routine. Dual diagnosis is an additional capability we offer when relevant, not a precondition for admission. Darren will honestly assess fit during the intake call.

Most clients report noticeable improvement by week two to three of the treatment program. The structured routine, therapy sessions, and peer support at our mental health retreat often produce mood improvements earlier. Anxiety symptoms typically improve alongside depression during treatment. Results vary from person to person.

We treat anxiety, trauma related conditions, co-occurring disorders, mood disorders, and executive burnout at our mental health retreat. We use the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 at your initial assessment to establish baseline scores. Mental health conditions outside our expertise receive referrals to appropriate specialists.

Deep trauma treatment requires more than 30 days. We begin preparation during the first month but reserve full EMDR therapy sessions for eight-week or longer stays. A 30-day program provides depression treatment through CBT and builds a foundation for full recovery.

Wellness retreats provide relaxation and general wellbeing. Our mental health retreat provides psychiatric assessment, medication management, CBT, and clinical treatment alongside holistic therapies. Depression treatment at Jintara measures outcomes through clinical tools such as the PHQ-9.

Our aftercare program provides ongoing support after treatment. Weekly groups run for one to one and a half hours. We follow up at one, three, and six months. Discharge from the treatment program includes a relapse prevention plan, guidance on outpatient care near your home, and referrals for continued care.

Depression can go into remission and recur. Treatment gives you coping skills for recognising early warning signs. Denise teaches you to spot changes in thoughts and behaviours that signal depression returning so you can act early. This is why our aftercare program supports long term recovery.

Mornings start with vitals and therapy. Midday includes psychoeducation on mental health. Afternoons include holistic activities such as gym, Muay Thai, or yoga. Evenings involve recovery routines and treatment groups. Saturdays include excursions in northern Thailand. The structure counteracts the inactivity that depression creates.

Maximum 10 clients at our mental health retreat, each with a private room. Quiet riverside setting in Chiang Mai. Darren leads intake personally. Many clients are executives and professionals who need discretion. Everything is confidential. Jintara protects your privacy.
